About Us

A Little About Our History

First Christian Church has a long-standing history in the community of Port Arthur, TX. Founded in 1904, the church has been in three locations, moving to its current location in 1984. The Lord has blessed this church family and provided greatly even when all hope seemed lost. The building was destroyed in the aftermath of Hurricane Rita in 2005 and again during Hurricane Harvey in 2017. But, by the grace of God and the steadfastness of the congregation, they continue to serve! The history of the church has been forever engraved in Texas history both literally and figuratively. As a child, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Janis Joplin was a member of the church choir, and in 1992, a Texas State historical marker was placed on the church grounds honoring its longevity on the Texas Gulf Coast. The church has a blended worship style and a “come as you are” attitude.

The members and staff have worked hard to develop an outward focus. Tuesday nights offer a drive-thru prayer ministry, allowing people to have prayer in their vehicles in the parking lot. Along with numerous bible studies and a midweek children’s ministry, the church partners with a local theater company to host dinner theater shows with proceeds going to mission projects. The past few months have seen a revitalization taking place. In the summer of 2021, they withdrew from the Disciples of Christ and joined the fellowship of DHF. They also called their Associate Pastor to become their new lead pastor with the retirement of their senior pastor. They began a renovation of their sanctuary, updated their streaming capability, rebranded their logo, increased their social media presence and will release a new website in the fall. The Church is led by Pastor Drew McClellan, along with one of the best administrative staff in the country, a strong Elder team, and numerous volunteers. They look forward to many years of fellowship with DHF and are extremely excited to see where God leads them.
